J. R. Brooker was actualy Pvt. John R. BROOKER joined the 3rd Calv SC, Nov. 2, 1861, and he and his brother-in-law George W. FERGUSON asked for transfer to Co. E of the 11th SC infantry, Jul 7th 1862. He was injured and captured Jun 10, 1864 as a POW at Hampton US Hospital, Ft. Monroe, VA. Hospital reports that he was injured in the Battle of Petersburg on Jun 10, 1864 and allowed to wallow in his misery and infection, finally operated on Aug. 3, 1864. The doctor reported it was the "FEVER" that killed John on 10 Sept, 1864 ... certainly not him waiting 54 days to operate.
