Elmer Covert, the son of Alexander and Stella Golladay Covert, was born November 12, 1903, on a farm southwest of Beloit. He died November 27, 2001, at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, fifteen days after his 98th birthday.
Elmer grew up on the farm and attended country school. He was united in marriage to Mildred A. Wagner June 21, 1930, at Salina. One son and one daughter were born to that union. After their marriage, the family made their home on the farm and later lived in Idaho and California, as well as in Russell, Lyons and Great Bend, before returning to Beloit in 1979. The couple had been privileged to spend more than 59 years of married life together at the time of Mildred's death in 1989.
In addition to farming, Elmer was a machinist and he operated machine shops in California as well as in Beloit. He also worked at the Gibson store in Pampa, Texas, for several years before his retirement. Elmer was a former member of the Elks Lodged and enjoyed doing woodworking in his spare time.
In addition to his wife, Elmer was preceded in death by a son, Bill Covert.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Ball and her husband, Melvin, of Pampa, Texas; a brother, Roy Covert and his wife, Beulah, of Beloit; three grandchildren, Linda Lanham and her husband, John, Cindy Lewis and Bryan Covert; four great-grandchildren, Crystal Herring, Johnny Blakemore, Michael Lewis, and Shanda Arnzen; and four great-great-grandchildren, Madison Lewis, Kayle Arnzen, Brittney Blakemore, and Zerick Arnzen.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Saturday, December 1, 2001, at McDonald Funeral Home, Beloit. Dr. Rick Grace of the First Christian Church officiated. Music selections were "In The Garden" and "Beyond The Sunset" by Donna Munsey, vocalist, and Richard Broadbent, organist. Casket Bearers were Shanda Arnzen, Johnny Blakemore, Crystal Herring, Linda Lanham, Cindy Lewis, and Michael Lewis.
Interment was in Elmwood Cemetery, Beloit.
