Richard was drafted into the U.S. Army. He would be assigned as an Infantryman in Company A, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. He achieved the rank of Private First Class.

Richard's Vietnam combat tour began on May 9, 1967.

He was killed in action 39 days later near the village of Bien Hoa, Mekong River, South Vietnam, on June 17, 1967. The cause of death was multiple fragmentation wounds.

Gary's name is on the Vietnam Memorial Wall on Panel 21E, Line 122.

Posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
