George Lawrence Casey was born in Queens County Ireland in 1847, the son of Lawrence and Ann (Moran) Casey, also natives of that county. His father was a shoemaker by trade and followed this occupation in Astoria, after coming to the Unites States with his family in 1849.

George was the eldest and was two years old when the family came to America. He was reared in Astoria, educated in the public schools of the Fourth Ward and learned the shoemaker's business with his father. He became an instructor of this trade on Randall's Island, where he continued for sixteen years. In 1865, he was a volunteer in the United States Navy and for one year served on a gunboat.

After being discharged from the Navy in 1866, and living in New Jersey for twelve years, Mr. Casey returned to Astoria in 1878 and joined the Long Island City Fire Department. From 1877 to 1880 he was its Chief Engineer.

On January 2, 1891, Mr. Casey was appointed by Long Island City Mayor Patrick J. Gleason to become the first Chief Engineer of the newly organized, paid fire department. But in 1893 there was a political change in the administration and he was deposed by Mayor Sanford. Mr. Casey contested the matter in the courts and was reinstated, but in the following September was again discharged.

Chief Casey was one of the organizers of the Veteran Firemen's Association of Long Island City and was its first President. He was also a member of the Ringgold Post of the Grand Army of the Republic.

George Casey was married to Rose Ann Joyce, who was born in Astoria and they had five children.

The Casey family has a long history of extraordinary public service, locally, nationally and internationally. One of his grandsons, William Casey (born 1913 in Elmhurst) was appointed Director of the Central Intelligence Agency by President Reagan in 1981.
