FULTON – Vertie Mae Thornton, 89, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012, at her daughter's home in Los Lunas, N.M. She was born Jan. 29, 1923, to George Ruffus Burton and Vertie Mae Marbutt Burton. She was raised in Itawamba County. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, gardening and crossword puzzles. She was a great caregiver.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Fulton with Bro. Scott Nicholson officiating. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Red Bay, Ala.

Survivors include one son, Jimmy Thornton of Chebanse, Ill.; two daughters, Johnie Mayhew of Los Lunas, N.M., and Carrol Justice of Westland, Mich.; two sisters, Mina Palmer of Fulton and Belle Kent of Bourbounis, Ill.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Thornton, who died in 1980; and 15 brothers and sisters.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Thornton, Aaron Thornton, Todd Oger and William Lavy.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time today at McNeece-Morris Funeral Home in Fulton.
