John Gaffneys death followed two sieges of illness. He was stricken first in October and was treated for pneumonia for three weeks at the hospital. He returned home and passed four weeks convalescing.
Resuming his work as toolmaker, he was taken ill again four weeks later. Doctors diagnosed his second illness as appendicitis and advised an operation. The operation was performed on Jan. 2 and two weeks later peritonitis developed.
Mr. Gaffney was a native of Oswego, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Gaffney of East 10th street, well known Oswego residents.
Following his marriage to Miss Margaret Shannon in 1916, the couple moved to Syracuse, where they have made their home since. He was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church and a member of its Holy Name Society. He was affiliated with Bond 3, Nocturnal Society.
Besides his wife, he is survived by four sons, John Joseph, Robert E., William D., and Paul L. Gaffney; two daughters, Miss Frances A. and Miss Theresa A. Gaffney; a brother, Bartholomew Gaffney, and a sister, Mrs. Winifred Dickinson.
In the same home that rites were conducted two weeks ago for his brother, John Gaffneys' funeral will take place at 8:20 a.m. Saturday and in St. Anthony of Padua Church at 8:50 o'clock. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery.
