Alexander Campbell was the youngest of the children of George Campbell, an immigrant from Scotland, and Hope Wood. He was born in Oxford Co., Ontario, Canada, most likely near Woodstock. The family was in central Michigan by 1864 and then in Oxford Tp., Johnson Co., IA by 1869. Alexander married Martha Ann Oesterreicher on 1 Jul 1872 in Iowa City, Johnson Co., IA. In the early years of their marriage, in about 1876 when Mary Etta was four years old, they moved to a farm near Hamlin, Audubon Co., IA where Alexander died of a sudden illness on 7 Nov 1885. He and several other Campbell family members are buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.

1. Mary Etta, b. 11 Sep 1873 in Johnson Co., IA; m. 7 Sep 1892 in Johnson Co., IA to John Paul Oberholtz; d. 1 Oct 1837 In Redfield, IA.
2. Minnie Alice, b. 13 May 1875 in Audubon Co., IA; m. 9 Jun 1901 in Eagle Lake, TX area to Benjamin Franklin McCormick; d 21 Jan 1945.
3. Frederick Ellsworth, b. 15 Sep 1885 in Audubon Co., IA; m. Mabel Helen Hood; d. 9 Oct 1966.
