Giovanni's name went through multiple changes in the first 36 years of his life. Sometime before he left Italy, his surname had changed to Mangini. And later, probably after he emigrated to the United States, he anglicised his name to John Mangin.
On Aug 24, 1901 John married Concetta DeVincentis (1877 - 1959). They had eight children:
* Giuseppe Mangini (b/d. 1902)
* Stella Mangin DiPlacido (1901 - 1975) [ADAPTED]
* Nunzio Mangin (1905 - 1975)
* Rose Mangin Akre (1912 - 1989)
* Mary Mangin Benacci (1913 - 2007)
* Ann Mangin Pillitteri (1914 - 1999)
* a daughter (still living)
* Joseph Mangin (1917 - 2002)
John and Concetta emigrated to the United States in 1911, settling in Erie, Pennsylvania, bringing Stella and Nunzio with them. They bought a home on the 1000 block of West 21st Street. Their younger children, beginning with Rose, were all born in Erie.
John was a laborer. He worked for the railroad in Butler, Pennsylvania, about 100 miles south of Erie. He later found employment at Hays Manufacturing in Erie as a machinist, putting the treads on pipes.
John died Sep 21, 1948. The family headstone in Calvary Cemetery, where he is buried, bears the surname that John had when he first entered the United States: "Mangini."
