Adella Alice "Della" Harris was one of 11 children born to Henry Wilber Harris and Emma Elizabeth (Walkden) Harris. Her mother was a small, frail woman of poor health, and being the eldest daughter in the family, Adella took on much of the responsibility of raising her younger brothers and sisters. By the time she was 16, Adella was making wedding dresses for her girlfriends and doing most of the sewing for the Harris family.

When her siblings were grown, Adella moved to Hurdsfield, Wells County, North Dakota, where her eldest brother was living. She took a job clerking in Howard Miller's Dry Goods Store, and it was there that she met and fell in love with James Hammond Gardner, a fellow clerk.

Adella and James were married on June 23, 1906 at the farm home of her brother Lewis Joseph Harris about 5 miles southwest of Hurdsfield.

About 1913 the family - husband, wife and 2 children - moved west where they homesteaded just across the Montana-North Dakota border about 100 miles south of the Canadian border. Originally settling near Richey, Dawson County, Montana, 10 years later the family moved to Fairview, Richland County.

Some 7 years after that, Adella's husband made his way to California where 4 of his sisters were living. His son James Franklin Gardner joined him that fall, and the next spring they sent for Adella and the 3 younger children: The eldest son opted to stay in Montana, not wanting to leave his high school sweetheart. It was in Southern California that the Gardner sibling reached adulthood, married and raised their own families.

After the death of her husband in 1940, Adella lived, for the most part, with her daughter Bobbie in Los Angeles County.

Living at 4254 Marwick Avenue, Lakewood, Los Angeles County, Adella was 76 years old when she passed away on October 28, 1957.

Survivors included her daughter Mrs Roberta Strimple, sons Thurlow Gardner, Glen Gardner, James Gardner and Kenneth Gardner, six brothers and two sisters.

Funeral Services were held on October 31st, with DeYoung Bellflower Mortuary in charge of arrangements, and burial was in Inglewood Park Cemetery.
