Melvin M. Jones of Green Lake, Wis., died on Feb. 11, 2012, at Juliette Manor in Berlin, Wis.
Born Oct. 16, 1925, in Fond du Lac, Wis. to Claude R. Jones and Marcia (Mathwig) Jones. Melvin attended school in Fond du Lac before joining the Seabees in 1943.
He proudly served his country until April of 1946.
Upon returning from the service, he worked at several jobs before joining the Fond du Lac Police Dept. where he served for six years. He applied the many skills he acquired to his life work. He built and remodeled homes and was self-employed as a custom painting specialist until his retirement.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 163 and served as Post Commander for Post 69 from 1979 to 1980 in Mayville, Wis.
Melvin enjoyed playing cards with family members, spending time with his grandchildren, watching the Packers and spending time in the great outdoors.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Sondra M. (Nielsen) Jones to whom he was married on Dec. 31, 1959, in Reno, Nev. and his daughters, Robyn Jones and Peggy (Jairus) Campbell. He is also survived by his daughters, Barbara (George) Toth, Kathleen (Doug) Jones and Cynthia Jones; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Patricia Klebs and Marilyn St. George; and his brothers, Claude Jones and Gerald (Joanne) Jones.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife's parents, Christian and Esther Nielsen; his father's wife, Marian Jones; his mother's husband, Clarence Casper; his sisters and their husbands: Wanda and Russell Foss and Dawn ad Allen Moss, his brother's wife, Delores Jones; his sister's husband, Edward Klebs; two brothers-in-law, David and Erik Nielsen and his sister-in-law, Sylvia, and her husband, Alphonse Gagnon.
Services: Honoring Melvin's wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal funeral service will be held.
Interment of ashes will be scheduled at a later date at Avoca Cemetery in Oakfield, Wis. with The Very Rev Brian M Beno of St. Paul's Cathedral in Fond du Lac, officiating.
