Edward Pennington Grounds was born June 6, 1869 in Hope, Arkansas (Hempstead County), son of John Henderson Grounds (1850-1926) and Mary Caroline Bland (1850-1928). Edward had seven younger siblings: Mary Ann Grounds, James Gilbert Grounds, Josiah Preston 'Joe' Grounds, Sarah Ophelia Grounds, John Wesley Grounds, Mattie Telitha Grounds, and Daniel Acey Grounds.

On December 5, 1898 in Paoli, Oklahoma (Garvin County), Edward married Nanette Rose Alma 'Nannie' Coulson, who was born October 7, 1865 in Tennessee. Edward and Nannie had two known children: Zephyr Annis Grounds (1899-1990) and John Charles Grounds (1904-1964).
