U.S. Congresswoman. After graduating first in her class from the University of Buffalo New York in 1930, she earned a law degree from that same institution in 1933, was admitted to the bar, and was a lawyer in private practice. Entering politics, she was Assistant District Attorney of Erie County, New York, (1938 to 1942). In 1943, she was elected as a Republican to the Seventy-eighth Congress, serving until 1945. While in office, she was a major advocate for women's rights in society and the workplace, by introducing the first equal pay for equal work bill on June 19, 1944. After leaving Congress, she stayed in public service. She was appointed to New York Governor Dewey's administration, was appointed counsel for the State Employees' Retirement System, (1945 to 1955) and served as Assistant District Attorney of Albany, New York, (1955 to 1979).
