Sarah Jane Wells, daughter of Charles Henry Wells and his wife, Marietta (Arnold) Wells, was born on 12 July 1871 in Hancock, Berkshire, Massachusetts. She married in Hancock on 1 September 1889, (at the age of 18), William Sylvenus Conklin. She died in Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland, where she was living with her daughter Linda Chaffee, on 28 October 1956.
