At 10 o'clock, May the 28th, 1918, the Death Angel visited the home of James Allen Pettry and took from our midst and bore away to the skies the spirit of this noble man.

James Allen Pettry was born in Summers county, W Va, January 5, 1869, being 49 years, 5 months and 23 days old at his death.

He was afflicted with a complication of diseases for about three months and spent about two months of the time in the Hinton Hospital where he was when he died. He grew weaker and weaker until his weak constitution gave away and his spirit went back to God who gave it.

Just before he died he called his only brother, C L Pettry, to his bedside and bid him goodbye and that he was ready and willing to go and that the way was clear and that he was ready to receive the reward which was awaiting him on the other side, ans then after suffering with pain for quite a while he placed his eyes on some object as though he was looking into the pearly gates; then the good Master claimed this noble man as his own. He had been a member of the Methodist church for twenty-seven years and was at his death a member in good standing.

He was always ready to say a word of comfort to anyone in time of distress and as a neighbor no man in his community attained more respect by this who knew him than did James Allen Pettry. No night was too dark or a day too cold for him to visit the sick and lend a helping hand every way possible. He was always glad to help anyone in distress...

Mr Pettry leaves behind to mourn their loss - a wife, father, mother, one brother and one sister and eight children - four boys and four girls, besides a host of relatives and friends...
