Mr. Chafin, 84, of Aiken, SC, died Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at his home.

Elmo always enjoyed telling people that he was born in a jail in Logan, WV, a son of the Jailer, Tom and the cook, Lou Emmie Chafin. A World War II veteran, he proudly served his country in United States Army and still enjoyed reunions with his many war buddies. Elmo came to Aiken in 1961 where became a very well known Barber. From 1973-1983 he worked with Owens-Corning Fiberglass because according to him no one wanted to get a haircut. In 1983 he returned to the Barber Shop where he remained until 2002 when his health began to fail. He was an avid Boater, Gardner, and was very active in Coast Guard Boater Safety.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Katherine Morgan Chafin, a son, James Chafin, Aiken, SC; daughters, Kitty Brown, Aiken, SC, Carol Paulino, Augusta, GA, and Barbara Reeves, Aiken, SC; sister, Jean Hunt, Aiken, SC; twelve grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren, and two great-great-granddaughters. In addition to his parents, a brother, and three sisters, a granddaughter, Krista Reeves, also preceded him in death.
