Nathan attended the famous Kinderhook Academy and was a schoolmate of Martin Van Buren. Nathan Beckwith and Professor Joseph Henry selected and surveyed the route of the Erie Rail Road. Nathan was a civil engineer of some reputation in the state of New York. He served as an officer during the War of 1812 and commanded a battalion of cavalry. In 1824, during the visit of General Lafayette, he was Marshall of the Day at Clermont. Politically he was a Jeffersonian Democrat. After the War of 1812 he was commissioned as Colonel of Calvalry by Governor Tompkins.
