Glen Wilbur Gardner was born on October 30, 1920 in Hurdsfield, Wells County, North Dakota, the youngest son and the youngest child of James Hammond Gardner (1875–1940) and Adella Alice "Della" (Harris) Gardner (1881–1957). Very shortly after his birth, the family moved to Fairview, Richland County, Montana.

In the early fall of 1927, Glen's father James made his way to California where 4 of his sisters were living. Before winter, his brother James Franklin Gardner joined his dad, and the next spring they sent for Della and the 3 younger children, leaving the eldest, Kenneth, who was reluctant to leave his sweetheart.

Most of his years of schooling were spent in Los Angeles County, and just months before his 19th birthday, Glen was married on June 1, 1939 in that county to Ruby Lee Jones.

Glen served in the US navy from 1944 to 1946, and after that he worked for Ameron of El Monte, a pipe and construction company, working up to being their senior buyer. He and his wife and family lived in Lynwood, Los Angeles County within walking distance of where his brother Bud and his family lived.
