He married Sallie M. Reeder. Their known children were: James Monroe Jr., Hepp, Lula, Lillie, Silas Pickens and Coke D. Cannon.

J. M. Cannon has a CSA pension application on line in the GA archives. He says he enlisted in Feb. 1862 in South Carolina and served with Company D of the 22nd S. C. Regiment. He surrendered with his unit in 1865 at Appamattox, VA. Proof of his death on Jan 6, 1933 is included. C. D. Cannon applied for his last $100 pension for funeral expenses. See Ga Confederate Pension Record # 182659-01054. Rest in peace, brave soldier!
