Edmund Garrett Barlow, former president of the Inglewood and Santa Monica California Stakes, and first president of the Columbus Ohio Mission, age 96, passed away at his home in Orem on January 10, 2001.

Garrett was born September 23, 1904, in Bountiful, Utah, the first child of Edmund Francis and Lucy Ann Garrett Barlow. He spent most of his early years in Bountiful, South Weber, Salt Lake City and Park Valley, Utah. He attended schools in Salt Lake City, Park Valley, Bountiful, Burley, Idaho and graduated from Davis High School in 1921. After graduation from high school he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as an apprentice mechanic. He enjoyed this work which led to his vocation, when he owned and operated automobile repair garages in Santa Monica and Inglewood, California, for many years.

Garrett was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all his life. In 1925, he began his service as a missionary in Australia, which cemented his desires to serve His Heavenly Father and Savior, Jesus Christ, at whatever the sacrifice and cost. While on his mission he made it a practice to memorize a scripture a day, so that in his later church service and until just before his death, he was able to recite scriptures to teach or make a point. He was a true defender of the Faith! In 1932 he was called into the bishopric of the Ocean Park (Santa Monica) Ward. While serving in the bishopric, he met Evva Maria Burnham and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on October 3, 1933. She preceded him in death on December 4, 1980.

Ed, as he was known in California, subsequently in 1936, was called to serve as Bishop of the Santa Monica Ward. When the Inglewood Stake was organized in November 1939, he was called to serve as the First Counselor to Alfred E. Rohner. He served faithfully in that position until September 1949, when he was called as president of that stake. When the Inglewood Stake was divided in 1952, he was called to preside over the new Santa Monica Stake. He held that position until 1967, when he was called to be the president of the newly formed Columbus Ohio Mission.

He found great satisfaction in serving the members of the Church and laboring with the other stake presidents who laid the foundation for the growth of the church in Southern California. He enjoyed being a part of the establishment of the seminary and institute programs in that area, as well as the building of the Los Angeles Temple. Upon returning from his mission, he served as Superintendent of Building and Grounds at the Los Angeles Temple, as well as director of the visitors' center and director of the genealogical library.

Both he and Evva greatly enjoyed their mission to Ohio and working with the many missionaries under their care. Following their mission, he was called to be a patriarch in the Santa Monica Stake and a sealer in the Los Angeles Temple.

In October 1982, he married Eula Wilkinson, originally from Joseph City, Arizona.

He is survived by his wife, Eula; and his six sons, a daughter, a foster son; 50 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, two brothers, I. Haven (Velma) Barlow, Layton, UT; David McKay Barlow, Clearfield; and one sister, Lucy B. Hansen, Arvada, CO.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 15, 2001, at 12 noon in the Suncrest 9th Ward Chapel, 130 North 400 West, Orem, Utah. Friends may call on Sunday evening at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem from 6-8 p.m. and at the church on Monday morning from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to service.
