COVE CITY – Richard Vernon Hawkins, Jr., 71 of Cove City, died January 20, 2011 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
He was a member of Cove City Free Will Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon and choir member. Mr. Hawkins was a self-employed farmer, following several years of employment at Hatteras Yacht Company in New Bern. He will be remembered for his generosity, morning cup of coffee with his friends, love of basketball and particularly the "Tarheels."
Vernon is survived by his wife Annette, one son, Gary Vernon Hawkins and wife Pam, one daughter, Debra Hawkins McCoy and husband Tim, both of Cove City; one brother, William "Bill" Hawkins of Deep Run, one sister, Marianna Hawkins Price of Kinston; and four grandchildren, Daniel McCoy and wife Annette; Brittany Hawkins; Morgan McCoy and Tyler Hawkins.
Services will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, January 23, 2011 at Cove City FWB Church.
Burial will follow at Cove City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Saturday, January 22, 2011 at Cotten Funeral Home and other times at the home, 612 Cicero Riggs Rd., Cove City, NC 28523.
