Mrs. Bartlett or "Ma Bartlett", as she was affectionately known, was director of the Ardmore High School (Alabama) band from the 1950s until her retirement in 1979. She became an icon in the community, recognized for her talents. Mrs. Bartlett was easily a mother to all band students and encouraged them to make the most of their lives. She also gave every student a nickname. She is also credited with starting the Miss Ardmore High School Beauty Pageant in 1970, which continues to be considered one of the best high school pageants in North Alabama.
After her retirement, she was involved in community service, the Ardmore Community Library, a member of the Limestone County Mental Health Association board of directors, and played Bridge in her spare time. She will be missed by many who will never forget her wacky sayings, like "Great Horned Spoons!".
Her husband Frank Bartlett, died on September 24, 2001, just four months after her death. Mrs. Bartlett was survived by her two daughters and their families: Kathy and Jerry McCown of Huntsville, AL, and Barbara and Gary Daly of Elkmont, AL.
