Born to Italian immigrants on September 26, 1909 and baptized Maria Antonia Fariello at Our Lady of Pompeii Roman Catholic Church on Carmine Street in New York City, Antoinette, or Anne as she is known to her family, was the fifth child of Paul and Nancy Lorusso-Fariello of Toritto, Italy a town in the Province of Bari located in the Puglia Region of Italy.
Anne grew up in New York City, a happy child, from a devoted Roman Catholic family, which consisted of her parents and siblings. When her mother Nancy's sisters Rosa, Isabella and Felicia Lorusso immigrated to America, they lived with Anne and her family until they were able to find a home of their own. It was the close-knit family values that kept the Fariello children together as they grew and had lives of their own.
While her parents raised their large family, Anne always did her share to help. She worked hard, along with her sisters and brothers, before and after school doing "homework" which was work done at home to help supplement the family's income. The "homework" consisted of sewing done by hand. They would sew artificial flowers made out of ribbons that were used for baby's hats and dresses.
Anne enjoyed school and excelled in mathematics and spelling. She graduated 9th grade from P.S. 90 located on 135th Street and 8th Avenue in New York City. She looked forward to attending high school and cried when her mother told her she would have to quit school to stay home to help with household chores and "homework". When she became of age, Anne found employment as a garment worker in a factory in Manhattan. She joined the International Ladies Garment Worker's Union where she remained a member throughout here entire career.
In 1940, Anne met her future husband Louis Anthony Bimonte at a social club where her younger sister Rose was a member. Rose often begged Anne to join her at the club for social night on Thursdays. Anne usually declined and finally one day decided to join Rose. It was there that she met Louis. He was dating another girl at the time and eventually stopped seeing her and asked Anne out. Louis, who is also of Italian descent, was nicknamed Gene by his family since his name in Italian was Luigi.
In February of 1943, during World War II, Gene began his two-year service in the Army. He served stateside as a private. While in the Army, Gene and Anne kept up their courtship by way of letters. Gene proposed to Anne in 1944 and, after he was discharged from the Army in January of 1945, they decided to marry.
Anne and Gene set their wedding date for September 23, 1945 at Our Lady of Pity Roman Catholic Church, on 149th Street in the Bronx - Gene's parish. Frank Fariello, Anne's oldest brother had to gave her away at the wedding because Anne's father, Paul Fariello, had died two years earlier on June 23, 1943. Approximately 100 guests, consisting of family and friends, celebrated the couple's marriage at a reception held at the American Legion Hall, on 138th Street and Third Avenue, where Gene was a member.
After they married Anne and Gene settled in an apartment in the Bronx. Anne continued her employment throughout her marriage as a garment worker making women's dresses and children's clothing. Gene worked at a factory making shoes. On February 2, 1968, they bought their first house at 1108 Pugsley Avenue in the Bronx.
On November 1, 1988, after 43 years of marriage, Anne's beloved husband Gene died from cancer. After her beloved Gene's passing, Anne then spent most of her time with her sisters, Mary Fariello-Biritela, Margaret Fariello Palumbo-Celli, and Felicia Fariello-Proscia. They all lived walking distance of each other in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx. Anne would often take a bus to visit with them.
After Anne's oldest sister, Mary, died in 1995, Anne sold her house and rented Mary's old apartment to be nearer to Margaret and Felicia. After her sister Margaret moved to Hackettstown, New Jersey and her sister Felicia, known to the family as Fanny, died in January of 1998, Anne decided to move with her niece Laura Fannan-Stewart to Hackettstown, New Jersey.
Anne lived with Laura until her death on May 23, 2002. Although she never had any children, Anne was the beloved Aunt to many nieces and nephews who will never forget the gentle, sweet and loving woman she was to all of them.
