Henry South, 15, Accidentally Killed by Discharge of Rifle
Strangely absent at nightfall after leaving his home in Yountville in the morning to go quail hunting, the body of 13-year-old Henry South, with a rifle wound in the right breast, was found by a searching party last night headed by the boy's father and Constable Arch Patton.
The youth bad been accidentally shot by his own 22-calibre rifle while pulling the weapon up after him on a stack of prune trays on the Grove Ranch a short distance west of Yountville.
Mortally wounded, the boy wandered a short distance, before collapsing to the ground. Another hunter, Augustus Whiffan pf Yountville, passing by the scene several hours later found the rifle and with no thoughts of a possible tragedy brought the gun to Yountville and turned it over to Constable Patton for identification and return to its owner.
The discovery of the gun was recalled when the boy was reported missing and the search was immediately started on the Grove ranch.
Coroner William Blake will hold an inquest this evening.
The tragedy came as a terrible shock to the parents and a sister, Genevieve.
The family has resided in Yountville for many years and is well known.
The remains are at the Webber Funeral Parlors.
The funeral will be held from the Baptist Church at Yountville at 2 o'clock tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon.

Napa Youth Is Victim Of His Own Firearm
A victim of his own gun, a 22-calibre rifle, the body of Henry South, a 15-year-old lad of Yountville, was found Tuesday night in the hills west of that town by a searching party that was headed by Constable A. B. Patten. The officer went to the spot where the body lay immediately on hearing reports that the boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. John South, had been missing since morning, as twice during the day, Mr. Patten had passed nearby and noticed the boy's gun lying under a tree.
Apparently the lad had shot himself accidentally shortly after leaving his home for a quail hunting trip in the morning. Dropping the gun, he staggered on for about twenty-five feet further, where he fell and lay until his body was found ten hours later.
It will never be known just how the accident happened, as the boy was alone at the time. It Is thought the gun was accidentally discharged while he was attempting to drag the weapon to the top of a stack of drying trays to which he had climbed.
