Malcolm Miles Andrews, 86, of Fairmont, N.C. died Friday, August 17, 2012 at his home.

Malcolm's entire career was in banking and he continued to show an interest in the world of finance until the end of his life. He began his career with 4 years of service to Scottish Bank, followed by a 41-year career with United Carolina Bank, where he was senior Vice-President with the Fairmont Branch at the time of his retirement in 1989.

Malcolm served for 2 years in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II, prior to entering the work-force. He was stationed in Italy in the 15th Air Force, during which time he was assigned to a B-24 Bomber.

He was a devoted and faithful member of the Fairmont First Baptist Church for over 55 years, serving in a number of capacities, including Deacon, Director of the Sunday School Department, Church Treasurer, Trustee, and as member of various other committees.

Malcolm was a leading civic and community worker in Fairmont and Robeson County. He served on the Southeastern General Hospital board, South Robeson County Development board, South Robeson Medical Planning Scholarship Fund, Howard Louis Scholarship Fund, was president of the Civitan Club, and participated in many other community activities. He had a passion for golf and, until recent years, he spent countless, happy afternoons on Flag Tree Golf Course.

Malcolm was known by others as a quiet and thoughtful man. He was a gentleman of an era now almost forgotten. His generosity and philanthropy were long-reaching, but always extended to others in his way, quietly and without fanfare. He was dignified in life and dignified in death. He will be sorely missed; but his legacy of love and devotion to family and community will long be remembered.

His parents, now deceased, were Robert Brown Andrews and Bessie Turbeville Andrews, also of Fairmont, N.C.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jean Shelley Andrews, of the home, daughter, Julie Andrews Barr, and son-in-law, Reverend Kelly Barr He has three grandchildren, Chrysta "Chrissy" Gail Andrews, of Fairmont, James "J.P." Preston Barr, of Lumberton, and Robert "Robbie" Miles Barr, of Fairmont.

Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church, Fairmont. Burial will be at Floyd Memorial Cemetery in Fairmont.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to First Baptist Church South Main St, Fairmont.
