LAWRENCE E. ABLES FUNERAL HELD FRIDAY
Funeral services for Lawrence Edward "Skinner" Ables, 72, were conducted Friday afternoon.

Mr. Ables died Wednesday, September 14, in a Denison hospital. His death followed six weeks critical illness.

Ken Pate pastor with the Madill First United Methodist Church where Mr. Ables was a member, officiated the services. Music was arranged by Mary Margaret Beard with JoAnn Robertson as organist. Burial was in the Woodberry-Forest Cemetery.

Born in Madill May 27, 1911, Mr. Ables was reared here and was educated in the Madill school system. Following his high school graduation he worked for Ables Construction Co., a firm which built most of the highways in Marshall County during that period. He was later a regional construction foreman with the Roosevelt era Works Project Administration and worked 25 years as the Sinclair wholesale oil and gas distributor.

Long active in civic and community affairs, he was the Marshall County Civil Defense director 35 years and served as campaign director with the March of Dimes more than 20 years.

His community service also involved him in school and municipal affairs. He served 11 years as a member of the Madill school board president on two occasions.

Mr. Ables served as Madill city council member 13 years, serving two terms as mayor and retiring to accept an appointment as city manager. He held the city administrator position two times, serving a total of seven years in that office.

He was also a volunteer with the Madill Fire Department, serving in the volunteer capacity 30 years before retiring.

During his tenure with the city as a council member and as city manager, Mr. Ables helped develop the Madill Industrial tract site, the municipal airport and the Madill Public Works Authority for major improvements to the city's water and sewer system during the 1960's.

Following his municipal service, Mr. Ables joined the staff of the Southern Oklahoma Development Association. His primary work with SODA involved serving as criminal justice coordinator for the 10 county region.

In his work with SODA, Mr. Ables was instrumental in helping obtain funding to establish the Lake Texoma Law Enforcement program for Marshall and Bryan counties. He also helped create the Southern Oklahoma Waste Disposal Authority and had a key role in helping Marshall County process the application for cost sharing funds in the construction of the county jail.

It is estimated that in his roles as city council member, city manager and through SODA Mr. Ables secured or was directly involved in obtaining over $4,000,000 in federal and state grants for Madill and Marshall County.

Mr. Ables was also a member and past-president of the Madill Rotary Club and a 32nd degree Mason.

He was married to Jeanette Drain Sept. 16, 1967, in Plano, Tex. She survives.

Survivors also include his son, Lyn E. Ables, of Madill; Two daughters Linda Kay Cast of Madill and Judy Smiley of Burkburnett, Tex.
