Paul J. Smith, 89, of Dutchess Lane, died Thursday, July 19, 2012, at the VA Medical Center in Durham.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday July 26, 2012 at Sheets Memorial Baptist Church, where he was a member, conducted by Revs. Frankie Matthews and Mark Acuff. Burial with military honors will follow in Forest Hill Memorial Park. The family will see friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday July 25, 2012 at Davidson Funeral Home.

Paul was born in Davidson County, March 27, 1923, to Anderson Ray Smith and Rosa Snider Smith. He was in partnership with his brother, in Smith Brother's Grocery for 25 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during WWII. and was a member of American Legion Post 8. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Hoyle Smith.

Paul is survived by: son, Joseph Lynn Smith and wife Patricia of Fairfax Station Va. ; daughter Glynis Smith Cowell and husband John of Durham; four grandchildren; Kelly Rossi, Tim Smith, Jack Cowell, and Kate Cowell; two great-grandchildren, Glynis Rossi and Aaron Rossi and his brother and business partner Carroll Smith and wife Mildred of Linwood, N.C..

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sheets Memorial Baptist Church Education Fund, 210 Cotton Grove Road, Lexington, N.C. 27292.
