Vera Elizabeth Holland Wray, 99, of Wirtz, passed away on Sunday, August 19, 2012, at her home surrounded by her family. Vera was born on February 5, 1913, to Johnny Tilton and Mary Elizabeth Meyers Holland, in Brown County, S.D. After the death of her mother they moved to Phoenix, Ariz. At the age of three her father returned with four small children to the Brushy Hill Community of Franklin County.
She retired from Burnt Chimney School Cafeteria after 18 years. Vera is the oldest member of Sandy Ridge Baptist Church and a lifetime member of Blackwater Bowhunters, Inc. She loved to cook, go out to eat and socialize, she loved people and loved her many flowers.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Joe Thomas Wray; daughter- in-law, Mabel Wray; sisters, Louise Hudson, Frances Holland, Bertha Pitzer and Beulah Board; and brothers, Louis Holland, Wallace Holland, Wilson Scott and Perry Scott.
She is survived by a son, Windle T. Wray; daughter, Dawn Self (A.L.); grandchildren, Gary T. Wray, Lori Ann Wray, Johnnie T. Wray, Aubrey "Tommy" Self (Tracy), and Andy T. Self (Amy); step-grandchildren, Brenda Meador (Tim), Sandra Mills (Jay), Rodney Stamback, Michael Stamback, William Reed Watkins, and Pasleigh Roberts; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21, 2012, at Conner-Bowman Funeral Home (Rt. 220 Chapel). Graveside Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 22, 2012, from Franklin Memorial Park with Pastor Joe Dillon officiating.
