Joyce C. Loritz, age 91, a lifelong Valders resident, passed away Friday, March 27, 2020 at Next Step at Felician Village, Manitowoc.
She was born on December 8, 1928 in Valders, daughter of the late Reuel and Esther (Harvey) Thompson. Joyce attended Valders High School, graduating with the class of 1946. She then went on to Manitowoc County Teacher’s College, receiving her teaching certificate in 1971. Joyce was employed at O’Grady’s Grocery Store, Valders, as well as the Valders Telephone Company from 1946 until 1953. She taught at Hilbert Elementary School for 22 years, retiring in 1991 then continued as the librarian for five years. On September 26, 1953 she married Lester Loritz at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Valders. He preceded her in death on February 28, 1993. Joyce was an active member with Faith Lutheran Church Women as well as the altar guild and Librarian at the church. She taught Sunday school for 30 years and was a member of the senior choir for 30 years. Joyce also served on many church boards throughout her years at Faith Lutheran Church. She was a charter member of Viking Rasemaler’s, charter member of Sons of Norway Vennskap Lodge, lifelong member of Thompson-Burkart Post 28 American Legion Auxilary, member of Manitowoc County Retired Educators Association, former member of the Roselawn Homemakers, and a current member of the Valdris Samband and AARP. In her younger years, Joyce knitted many hats and booties that were donated to many hospital NICU’s. She enjoyed baking, canning, painting and crocheting.
Survivors include three sons: James (Mary) Loritz, Elkhart Lake, Jon (Colleen) Loritz, rural Valders, and Joseph (Robin) Loritz, Manitowoc; nine grandchildren: Reuel (Jennifer) Loritz, Jessica Loritz, Sara (Jason) Jensen, Ezdon Loritz, Jenna (Jonathon) Franzen, Tore (Sara) Loritz, Ryan (Chelsea) Loritz, Michael (Cassidy) Loritz, and Rachel Loritz (special friend Josh); great-grandchildren: Andrea (David) Schneider, Alissa (Sean) Classey, Zachery, Nicole, Mitchell, Ava, Maxwell, Gillian, Finn, Coraline, Kinsley, Nevaeh, Lauren, Luke, Oscar, Stellie, Liam, Juliana, and Molly; one great-great-grandson: Michael ; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Alice Thompson, and Gerald “Fuzzy” (Mary) Loritz. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.
She is preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one great-granddaughter: Rachel; one brother: Harvey Thompson; two sisters: Dorothy Nicoloff and Judith (Larry) Valleskey; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Kenneth (Belinda) Loritz, Charles Loritz, Margaret Loritz, Lloyd (Betty) Ford, Marie Ford, Gladys Loritz, Clemens Loritz, Marlene(Richard) Ratajczak, Delphia (Kubachy) Braun, Alex Kubachy, John Braun, Jean Mae (Lucian) Hartsock, Beatrice (Tom) Moore, and Floyd “Whitey” Loritz.
Due to precautions put in place by health officials, there will be no public services at this time. Joyce will be laid to rest at Our Savior Cemetery, Valders, and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made in Joyce’s name to Faith Lutheran Church, Valders, or given to the family for donation of their choice.
