Walter L. Nelson, 77, of 617 Baronet Lane, Holmes Beach, Florida, died October 11, 1989. Burial will be officiated by Pastor Linda Locklin 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, at Our Saviors Cemetery, Valders.
He was born in Valders, October 10, 1912, son of Otto and Sophia Nelson. He graduated from Valders High School in 1930. Received his Teaching Certificate from Manitowoc County Teachers College in 1932. In 1941 he received his Degree from University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was employed at the General Accounting Office in Washington, D.C. After the start of World War II he was commissioned as Lieutenant of the United States Navy and was sent to Port of Spain Trinidad where he served as Communications Officer under Admiral Robinson.
After the war he returned to Washington where he was transferred from General Accounting to Veterans Affairs and then to the State Department. His assignment was to Mexico for 10 years, serving under several U.S. Ambassadors. Later to Paris, France, and several years at Frankfort, Germany. His last post was Consul at Ankara, Turkey. In 1966, he took early retirement in order that his 4 sons would complete their education in the United States.
Survivors include his wife, Marge, four sons, Wayne, Jeffrey, Brian and Donald all of Florida; a brother, Russel Nelson of San Bernadino, California; four sisters, Mrs. Hartley (Lola) Torrison of Sarasota, Florida, Mrs. Fred (Emelette) Lane of Tipton, Indiana, Mrs. Edward Anderson (Janet) of Manitowoc and Mrs. Wm. (Harriet) Gurgle of Chicago, Illinois; a sister-in-law, Mrs. (Clayon) Bergetta Nelson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; other relatives, nieces and nephews and cousins.
