FERN A. TURNELL

Fern A. Turnell, age 85, long-time resident of Valders, died on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at the Touchstone Living Centers in Fond du Lac.
Fern was born on March 5, 1923, in the township of Eureka, the seventh of eight children of Bertel and Marie (Mortensen) Petersen. She graduated from Milltown High School in 1941, and married Len Turnell in St. Paul, Minn., on Aug. 14, 1943. She moved with Len to Valders, where he taught vocational agriculture at the local high school for more than 34 years. Len preceded Fern in death on Jan. 2, 1997. Fern was an active member of her community and particularly of Faith Lutheran Church, where she served for many years as church secretary. She also worked nearly 20 years as a secretary at Holiday House in Manitowoc, which serves individuals with disabilities, and played for more than 50 years as a regular member of Valders' longest running bridge club.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Len; son: Jon Turnell; sisters: Pearl Walker; Opal Johnson; and Ruby Johnson Greenlee; brothers: Herloff, Holger and Howard Petersen;
sisters-in-law: Helen Knight; Gwendolyn Hodgson; Ada Petersen; and Ruby Turnell; and
brothers-in-law: Orion Walker; Walter Johnson; Don Johnson; Nic O'Connel; Roy Turnell; Jack Turnell; Gaylord Knight; and Russ Hodgson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at Faith Lutheran Church, Valders. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Bill Gruenstern. Burial will follow the service at Our Savior Lutheran Cemetery.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008, at Faith Lutheran Church, Valders, from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m.
Memorials may be sent to the Endowment Committee of Faith Lutheran Church, which provides scholarships and other services, a committee Fern served on for many years, Holiday House, and the Alzheimer's Society. Memorials may be sent to Jim and Anne Fuenger, 977 Meadow Lane, Fond du Lac, WI, 54935, or collected at the time of the service.
The Christianson & Deja Funeral Home and Cremation Care Center, Valders, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
