OBITUARY :
MAJ. DAVID JOHN BLACKWOOD, U.S. Army retired, 73, formerly of Waynesboro, PA and Mechanicsburg, PA, died at 11:34 P.M., Monday, August 20, 2012 in ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg, PA. He had been in failing health since April.

Born August 5, 1939 in Rockford, IL, he was the son of the late Thomas C. and Josephine (Paige) Blackburn.

He was a graduate of Northern Arizona University and University of California Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, CA.

Maj. Blackburn retired from the United States Army, where he served in various locations throughout the world and worked in the Judge Advocate General's Corp.

He and his wife, Irene E. (Earl) Blackburn, were married on June 5, 1965 in Washington, D.C.

Following his retirement from the military, Maj. Blackburn did contract law for the Navy Depot in Mechanicsburg.

He was a member of the State Bar of California, Reserve Officers Association, and the Military Officers Association of America, where he was also a member of the Upper Potomac Chapter.

Maj. Blackburn enjoyed traveling, reading, and listening classical music, especially opera.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Jason E. Blackburn of Point of Rocks, MD and Jennifer B. Miller of State College, PA.

He was the last of his immediate family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Edward C. Blackburn.

Services and burial will be private in Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: UMCOR, C/O Christ United Methodist Church, 100 South Church Street, Waynesboro, PA, 17268 or contributions may be made directly to the church at the same address.
