John H. Barter was born in Beverly, Mass., in 1846. He was the son of John Barter(b. Mass.) & Rebecca(Burchstead) Barter( b.Mass.)

John H. Barter, Jr. was a 19 year-old seaman, residing in Beverly, Mass. when he enlisted January 2, 1864 as a Private. On January 14 he mustered into Co. "C", Mass. 59th Infantry. He was listed as a Prisoner of War, March 25, 1865, Fort Stedman, VA. He was exchanged March 29, 1865, place not listed.
He was Mustered Out on May 24, 1865.

John H. Barter was single and living at the Soldier's Home in Chelsea, Mass. when he died November 5, 1916, of Cirrhosis of the Liver, at the age of 71 years, 1 month, 23 days. He had been a fisherman. Burial was in Central Cemetery, Lot 1, SD 11.(a big Lot, owned by Walter Rogers)
