Ahira Herrick Putnam was engaged in the shoe business with his brother Daniel. He was especially fond of horses and cattle, and was, also, the first to introduce dahlias in Danvers. He was superintendent of the Sunday school of the First Church and greatly interested in church work. The initial H was added to his name by act of legislature.
