Ellen Elizabeth Shenk Peachey, 88, teacher of Ikebana and English as a second language, died April 26, 2012 at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community.

Mrs. Peachey was born November 4, 1923 and raised in Newport News, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Henry Michael and Frankie Dora Showalter Shenk. After attending junior college at Eastern Mennonite School, she was married in 1945. She subsequently spent twelve years living in Europe and Japan, much of that time under the auspices of the Mennonite Central Committee in post-war relief, reconstruction and peace building. Her years abroad led to her interest in Ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) and working with the internationals seeking to learn English.

After returning to this country, Mrs. Peachey moved to Washington, DC, her home for the next twenty five years. She became active in the Hyattsville Mennonite Church; was on the board of learning center for disadvantaged children; completed a B.A. degree in English at the Catholic University of America; and became a founding member in the Rolling Ridge Study Retreat Community, a religious retreat center in Charles Town, West Virginia. In 1987 Mrs. Peachey and her husband were the first members of the community to become permanent residents of the retreat, where they lived for the next fourteen years.

In 2001, Mrs. Peachey moved to the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where she spent the remaining years of her life.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 66 years, Paul Peachey of Harrisonburg, Virginia; four children, Janet Peachey of Washington, DC; Carl Peachey of Key West, Florida; George Peachey and James Peachey both of Silver Spring, Maryland; four sisters, Mary Edith Layman of Newport News, Virginia; Alisa Regina Hillary and Helen Mabel Baker, both of Harrisonburg, Virginia; Emily Grace Shenk of Succasunna, New Jersey; a brother, Henry Michael Shenk, Jr. of Harrisonburg, Virginia; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Piekarski and two sisters, Fannie Virginia Oliver and Esther Louise Buckwalter.

Pastor Barbara Moyers Lehman and Chaplain Shirlee K. Yoder will conduct a memorial service in the Strite Auditorium at the Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 3:30 p.m.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at the Park View Mennonite Church Fellowship Hall from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
