John is survived by his wife, Shirley Corke Kemper; children: Mara, Kimberly, Brianna, Olivia and 1 grandchild. He was predeceased by a daughter, Christina.

John was a former pro competitive body builder who owned the Diamond Gym in Maplewood, NJ (sold to Dwayne McDaniels in 2007). He was the national Vice President and New Jersey state Chairman of the National Physique Committee and an NPC/IFBB judge. He received his bachelor's degree from Montclair State College.
