Iola was born and raised around Sinton, Texas, where she spent her life except a short period in Bee Co. She married in 1924 and was living there with her first husband Charles Lewis Hale, Sr. and their son Charles Lewis, Jr., in 1930, but was back at the home place in 1935 and 1940, after his death.

In 1951 she married Joseph Clarence Ternus. She remained in Sinton and helped raise his six children from a previous marriage -- Martha, Joe, Tom, Virginia, Mary, and Dan.
