Mr. Owens was born October 14, 1926 in Conway, a son of the late Syrus and Ava Hardee Owens. He was pre-deceased by his son, Kerry Neil Owens; his brother, Elbert Owens; and a sister, Leona Owens Vereen.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II. Oscar was raised in Myrtle Beach, and in 1958, moved to Houston, Texas, where he and his brother owned and operated Owens Brothers Construction. In 1963 he moved back to Myrtle Beach and continued to work in the construction business. In 1969 he joined the Merchant Marines and moved back home in 1980 following his retirement.
He is survived by two daughters, Donna O. Stack and husband, John R., and Kim O. Booth and husband, Murrell, both of Myrtle Beach; his sister, Elma L. Owens Bone of Myrtle Beach; his former wife, Annie Wilson Owens, of Myrtle Beach; his daughter-in-law, Gwen Smith Owens of Myrtle Beach; his four grandchildren, Richard S. (Kim) Herring II, Christy Herring (Jamie) Johnson of Aynor, Lauren Owens of Nashville, Tenn., and Addison Owens of Myrtle Beach; his seven great-grandchildren, Jennifer Rush, Trent and Bradley Chestnut, Richard S. Herring III, Ava Raine, Isabella, and Josselyn Herring, and his two great-great-grandchildren, Hunter and Emma Tindall. He was also survived and deeply loved by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, July 26, 2009 in McMillan-Small Funeral Home with burial following in the Ocean Woods Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3 p.m. Sunday, July 26, 2009 at the funeral home, prior to services.
