Charlie loved animals, especially the Clydesdale horses which were originally raised by his father. Charlie and Les Goetjen started the "Waverly Polled Herford Ranch" and began breeding polled Hereford cattle. Charlie was so kind to all animals and was often seen walking to the road to get the mail with his dog "Snoopy" and all the barnyard cats following – he looked like "The Pied Piper".
Charlie took an active part in the community he was born and raised in. He helped build the Rugby Community Hall and as late as April, 1978 he attended a dance at the Hall and danced nearly every dance (at this time Charlie was 70years old)
Mr Brown was an honorary member of the Royal Canadian Legion, an organization he enjoyed and supported until his death. Charlie also supported the County Band, now named "Chinook Wynds". It was a sight to behold to see his pride and excitement when he saw the band in a parade.
Charlie was a true son of a pioneer for he loved a rodeo and seldom missed the ones held in Calgary, Dog Pound, and Water Valley. He was a man who loved people, travel and meeting new friends. He enjoyed talking about "The Good Old Days" and had a memory second to none. Right up to the day of his death he could add figures in his head faster than someone with a calculator.
It would seem like the motto Charlie chose to live by was "Let Me Live in a House by the Side of The Road and Be a Friend to All Mankind."
Our dear Charlie is now in a place where there are no fields to plow, no horses and cattle to feed and no fences to fix. Rest in Peace, we all love you.
Mr Brown is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Barbara (James) McKendry, two grandsons and one granddaughter of Calgary, one brother and sister-in-law Bert and Della Smith of Didsbury, their two sons Bruce (Carol) Smith, Didsbury, Edgar (Shirley) Smith, Innisfail, Alberta, two sisters, Nora Prosser of Calgary, Violet Farley, Victoria, BC other relatives and many, many dear friends.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday May 22, 1982 at the United Church in Didsbury at 1:30pm with Rev W Douglas Waite officiating. Internment followed in the Didsbury Cemetery with Mountain View Funeral Chapels (Olds) Ltd in charge of the arrangements.
If friends desire, donations may be sent to the "Chinook Wynds" c/o Stan Softley, President Band Organization, Didsbury, Alberta T0M 0W0
