Josephine was born in Kansas, a daughter of Thomas and Eliza McCage. Her parents were listed together in Franklin County in the 1860 Kansas Territory census, but were in North Lawrence, Douglas County in the 1865 state census.

Most census reports list Thomas' birth in Ireland around 1820. (Some list New York.) He was listed in the 1859 voter census in Centropolis, Franklin, Kansas Territory. He signed his Civil War draft registration there and was appointed the post master at Centropolis in 1863. Eliza was born in Pennsylvania, probably after 1840.

Josephine was age 5 in the 1875 Lawrence, (city of) Douglas County, Kansas State census. She was listed with her parents and three older siblings. Josephine's two sisters, Nellie Carter and Olive Pine, as well as her brother, Perry McCage, are all buried in Lawrence.

Josephine was listed with her father in the 1900 census. She lived with her sister, Olive Pine, for a number of years and is buried near Olive.
