PORT BARRE - Funeral services for Edgar Sylvester "Tee" Burleigh Jr., 62, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2003, in Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Opelousas with burial in Bellevue Memorial Park Cemetery.

The Revs. Paul Bergeron and Jefferson J. DeBlanc co-celebrated the Funeral Mass.

Mr. Burleigh died at 1:30 a.m. Thursday, May 29, 2003, in the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Alexandria, where he had been confined for the last 18 months. Mr. Burleigh succumbed to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's Disease following a lengthy illness.

"Tee", as he was affectionately known by his many friends, was born and raised in Port Barre. He attended grade school, junior high, and high school in Port Barre. He received his B.A. Degree from the University of Southwest Louisiana in Lafayette. He received his M.A. Degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He then went on to receive his plus 30 hours above his M.A. Degree at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

Mr. Burleigh admirably and honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1958 through 1962, where he attained the rank of Airman First Class and was a Radio Specialist. He completed Radio/Fingerprinting School at the National Security Agency in Baltimore, Maryland, and Radio Communications School in Biloxi, Miss., and received Top Secret Clearance. He served on year in the United States and three years in Germany. He was stationed in Bremerhaven, Germany, during the historical Missile Crisis with Cuba in the 1960's.

Mr. Burleigh was an active member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Port Barre and attended one of the early Cursillos in Prairie Ronde. He was a Third Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3496 and served as past treasurer and proudly held the post of Financial Secretary for 27 years until his illness prevented him from continuing.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved spending time with his family and grandson. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife on antiquing ventures.

He is survived by his widow, the former Judith "Judy" Hidalgo of Port Barre. Two daughters and a son-in-law, Meredith Ann Burleigh of Washington and Brandy Nicole Burleigh Fontenot and Christopher A. Fontenot of Port Barre also survive him. He was the very proud grandfather and "Poppa" to Ian Burleigh Guidroz of Washington.

Two sisters, Mrs. Joy Ann Burleigh Hadden and Mrs. Rose Ann Burleigh Guidroz, both of Port Barre, further survive him. He is also survived by a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Keigh Hidalgo Ballard of Baton Rouge.

A brother, Lester Edmund Burleigh, formerly of Port Barre, predeceased him. His parents, Edgar S. Burleigh Sr. and Minnie Wyble Burleigh, both formerly of Port Barre, also predeceased him.

Pallbearers will be Joe Fred Godchaux, Donnie Perron, Lester Bourque, Ralph Nezat, Harold Carrier, and his brother-in-law, George Ballard. Honorary pallbearers will include: his grandson, Ian B. Guidroz, son-in-law, Christopher A. Fontenot, Dr. Kerry Thibodeaux, Dr. Gary Blanchard and Dr. Merrick Wyble.
