Affectionately known to her family as "Merky", she never let having a crippled foot stop her from living life to the fullest. In addition to raising a family on a rural farm and giving birth to her youngest child, David just a few months after her husband's unexpected and tragic death, Merky was known to break wild horses brought to the farm to turn them into riding horses and to walk as far as needed to tend her sick neighbors. When she contracted TB from a sick neighbor and knew the end was getting near she bravely wrote letters to her siblings asking them to take one of each of her five children thus ensuring each child would have a home after her death.
Her headstone was lovingly placed by her granddaughter, Ann McElrath Goss, who worked tirelessly along with her husband Jim to locate and record the burial sites of each of America's siblings, parents and grandparents and to ensure Merky's grave was marked and remembered.
