Kerry Compton was born on April 18, 1944 to Owen Compton (1913 - 1971) and Edith Mae (Hilliard) Compton (1914 - 2007). He was the last of two boys born to the couple.

Kerry loved sports and was an especially gifted baseball player. He played baseball for Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas and during the 18th round of the 1965 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft he was drafted by the New York Yankees. Kerry played for various minor league teams until 1968.

On November 27, 1970, Kerry married Ann E. Miller in Kansas City Missouri. Tragically, Kerry died in an automobile accident a little less than a year later in August 1971.
