Herbert (John) Ekola was born June 24, 1912 in Zimm, Minnesota, but grew up in Townsend and Ashby, MA. He was the son of Matti and Eliina Ekola.

Herb or Mr. Ekola as I grew up knowing him, as he was my dear neighbor since I was 2 years of age. Truly the only neighbors our family had until my teen years.

Herb and his wife Sylvia along with their oldest son John (at the time), bought the old farm on Tolend Road in Dover, N.H. in the early part of 1942, after moving up here from Mass. Herb worked for what eventually would become the Public Service Company of New Hampshire. He worked clearing trees away from the wires and eventually leading his own crew replacing Telephone / Public Service poles.

After their son John, came another son Ken, then Michael, and finally David or Davey. Dave was my brother's age and two and half years younger than myself. We grew up to be great friends....and still are to this day!

Along with his regular work, Herb raised chickens and sold eggs to the local markets in Dover and Somersworth. He also loved to cut down, cut up and split firewood, which he would cut from his own land which consisted of more that 50 plus acres. Later as a young adult, I would sometimes help him with this chore......He was like a second father to myself, my sister and my brother, as was Mrs. E, was like a second Mom. Dave and Mike were more like brothers than neighbors, and our parents were such good friends. It was a much different time. I still live on what's left of my family farm which is next still to the old Ekola farm. Wonderful memories....Thanks Herb for being a part of my life!
