Carl C. Winkler, 92, of Force and recently of St. Joseph Terrace in Weedville, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2012, at the DuBois Nursing Home.
Born Dec. 17, 1919, in Force, he was a son of the late Frank Winkler Sr. and Stella Gusherowski Winkler. On May 3, 1941, he was married to Shirley Geraldine Smart. She preceded him in death June 8, 1982.
He lived in Bennett's Valley all his life.
Carl was employed by the local coal companies for 25 years and was a lifetime member of the United Mine Workers of America. He retired from Stackpole Carbon of St. Marys in 1982 after 16 years.
He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church where he served as usher for many years. He was also a member of the New Shawmut Homes Inc, water company and helped maintain the water lines of Force for many years.
People will remember Carl for his pleasant demeanor, teddy bear personality, his helpfulness to anyone in need and his whistling.
He is survived by three children: Thomas (Chris) Winkler of Force, Dennis (Carolyn) Winkler of State College and Vina (Chuck) Veronesi of Weedville; a brother, John (Agnes) Winkler of Penfield; two sisters, Marguerite (Robert) Cortina of Force and Mary (Tutti) Canton of Force; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was also was preceded in death by three brothers: Norman, Ralph and Frank "Chow" Winkler.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Ralph M. Geer Funeral Home, Penfield. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Force with the Rev. Fr. Thomas Tyler as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery, Force.
