In the 1930 census Comer was living in Jackson County, Tennessee with his mother and paternal grandfather. His father had taken work as a penitentiary guard at the Tennessee State Prison. Comer moved to Detroit some time after the 1930 census.

On 14 Oct 1933, Comer married Alice Bernice St George in Steuben County, Indiana. They were both residents of Detroit when they married. On 24 Jun 1939, they welcomed a baby daughter, Sandra Lee Clemons. Tragically, she died at the age of 3 months due to an abscess in her abdominal wall, an operation and a staph infection.

By 1940, Comer's parents, John Leslie and Letha Brown Clemons, and his sister Myrtle Lois had joined them in Michigan. Alice and Comer owned a home in Royal Oak, Oakland, Michigan. Comer was a tire builder for U.S. Rubber Co. He registered for the WWII Draft on 16 Oct 1940, listing his wife, Alice, as next of kin.

The couple welcomed three children between 1941 and 1954. The 1950 census shows Comer brought his family in 1949 to live on Clemons Hollow Road, Jackson County, Tennessee, where he was working for the government as a census enumerator. His parents were living next door and farming.
