John Lloyd Baldwin, 85, of Girard died Monday, May 20, 2002, at his residence. He was born on October 1, 1916, in rural Girard, to Theodore and Anna (Leach) Baldwin. He attended schools in rural Girard. He served in the United States Air Force as a mechanic during World War II.

He worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant in Parsons from 1945 to 1960. He moved from Parsons to Girard in 1958. He was a farmer and mechanic for Markley and Sartin Implement Cos., both of Girard. He retired in 1982. He married Martha B. McElwain on December 11, 1941, southwest of Girard. She preceded him in death on February 5, 2001, He was a member of the Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member of the George C. Brown Post No. 26 American Legion of Girard and the Steven Bennefeld Post No. 7479, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Girard.

Survivors include two daughters, Joanne Davenport and Eleanor Peak, both of Girard; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Lyle Baldwin, and two sisters, Agnes Brauer and Louis Westhoff.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with the Revs. David Chinn and Michael Baldwin and Ralph Baldwin officiating. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery with military rites conducted by the United States Air Force. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, where friends may call after 9 a.m. Wednesday.
