PLATTSBURGH - The impressive funeral honors reserved by the United States Army for those who had served with it were accorded Master Sergeant George Sharland, U.S.A., retired here yesterday. Sergeant Charland died at Saranac Lake on Sunday and had been a resident of that village since his retirement from active duty with the 26th Infantry stationed at Plattsburgh Barracks on June 4, 1929.
A high mass of requiem was celebrated at nine o'clock at St. John's church by Rev. Father Cleary, assistant pastor. Six First Sergeants from Companies I, K and L, under First Sergeant Bressette, acted as pall-bearers. The flag-draped casket was carried on a gun caisson and a rife squad discharged a volley at the grave in Mount Carmel cemetery while a trumpeter sounded "taps."
Among the out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Elwin Beard of Irondale, Quebec; Charles Sharland of New York City and Mrs. Frank Sancomb of Malone. The United Spanish War Veterans attended the funeral in a body.
His date of birth is contested. His grave has it as 1886. His Army enlistment record from Feb. 2, 1901 gives his age at enlistment as 21 years, 7 months which would have made his birthday July 1880.
