Max was born on May 1, 1870 (birth name - Moishe-Mendel Rubenshtein) in Yalta, Crimea to Elya Smoryeh and Gitel Chana Rubenshtein. He emigrated to New York in the early 1890s. Throughout his life, he worked as a house painter, a food importer, a salesman and a business owner. He died at the age of 71 of natural causes on April 8, 1942. He is buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery next to his second wife, Celia.
