Civil War: Company F, 39th Missouri Infantry.

Joseph Douglass was born in Danville, Illinois, and as a young man he moved to Missouri where he married (1) Eliza Ellen Hickman in Knox County on February 28, 1856. After Eliza died in Knox County in 1863 he left his two sons in the care of family and enlisted as a private at Hannibal, Missouri, where he was mustered into Company F, 39th Missouri Infantry, on August 1, 1864. He was mustered out at St. Louis, Missouri, on July 19, 1865.

After the war he remained in Missouri where he married (2) Mary M. Hoye in Schuyler County on August 25, 1875. At some point they moved to Los Angeles County, California, where Joseph planted an orchard. After Mary's death in 1893 he moved to Pomona where he became a member of Pomona's Vicksburg Post, No. 61, Grand Army of the Republic. He filed for a Civil War veteran pension at Pomona on April 21, 1904, and received certificate No. 1,081,990. He became a charter member of Monrovia Post, No. 202, G.A.R., which received its charter on August 8, 1912, just a few months before his death. He was buried beside Mary in Monrovia's Live Oak Memorial Park.
