John Mercer Gilreath, son of John Kennedy Gilreath Jr. and Maybelle Allston Hethington, was born and grew up in Charleston, South Carolina. He attended Camden Military Academy, Porter Militery Academy, and The Citadel. After receiving an Engineering Degree from the University of South Carolina, he entered the US Air Force and served during the Vietnam War through the Gulf War.Being decorated with many medals and commendations, he rose through the ranks to retire LTCol. He had 3 girls with Yvonne Groves Gilreath, and the family moved all over the world, including Texas, Ohio, Montana, South Carolina, the Philippines and Germany. They enjoyed traveling throughout Europe, Russia, Asia, and the Middle East. Family and friends called him Jack or Jackie, and he was interested in woodworking, camping, traveling and fishing. He spent his last years in the Seattle/Tacoma area (near McCord AFB), where he was able to pursue his love of fishing, especially salmon, in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
Jack was a member of St. Andrew's Parish Episcopal Church(Charleston,SC),the Sons of the Confederacy, The Carolina Yacht Club, the Charleston Country Club, and a lifetime member of the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. He was survived by two daughters: Denise Groves Gilreath of Summerville,SC; Yvonne "Vonie" Allston Gilreath of Charleston,SC; and four grandsons (Denise's): Christopher Daniel Nicholson, William Andrew Nicholson, Kevin McMillan Graham, and Ryan Gilreath Graham.
There is also a memorial marker in the Gilreath-Groves family plot in Old St. Andrew's Parish Episcopal Church Cemetery, Charleston,SC. It is placed at the foot of their first daughter who died at age 4 of a medical condition. We will always miss his laugh and smile. DGG
